About Pancreatic Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), more than 37,000 Americans were diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas during 2007. Approximately 33,000 Americans died of pancreatic cancer that same year, making pancreatic cancer the fourth leading cause of cancer death overall.1

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death overall in the United States.1

The ACS also estimates that the lifetime risk of developing pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 80, and is about the same for both men and women. A person's risk may be altered by certain risk factors, including age, smoking, and diet.1

More than half of pancreatic cancers have metastasized at the time of diagnosis, with only 8% localized. The overall five-year survival rate is 4% (localized cancers have a 17% survival rate). Almost all pancreatic cancers are adenocarcinomas of the ductal epithelium, symptoms primarily caused by mass effect rather than disruption of exocrine or endocrine function.2

GEMZAR is indicated as first-line treatment for patients with locally advanced (nonresectable stage II or stage III) or metastatic (stage IV) adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. GEMZAR is indicated for patients previously treated with 5-FU.

Myelosuppression is usually the dose-limiting toxicity with GEMZAR therapy.
